'Seeking Whispers' is a piece I created as a part of the ART TRAnslation initiative organized by the Cambridge Rare Disease Network.
It's a reflection on gene therapy to cure deafness in babies. I mostly focused on the broader theme of healing the hearing loss.
Through symbols, such as a shell representing the cochlea, I explore the silent struggle of
deafness. The cochlea is enveloped in silence, depicted visually by surrounding darkness. Water and
reflections around the shell symbolize the journey of sounds attempting to connect with the cochlea –
the sparkling magic of gene therapy aiding the transduction of sound to electricity.
This piece was created amidst the woods near Addenbrooke’s Hospital, where pioneering successful trials of this
therapy took place. A baby who was completely deaf now can hear...🧡
When I was creating this piece I spent hours appreciating and witnessing different sounds. I remembered once again that being able to hear is a wonderful gift.
It is a visual representation of the beauty and
complexity of sound, as it strives to reach the unmoved ear, encompassing a narrative of hope and healing.
