Immersions: Into the River Cam, Cambridge, 2022
In this series of abstract photographs, I delve into the profound themes of attachment and release. A year ago, I embarked on a journey to Cambridge, shedding preconceived notions about how my life would unfold in this new place. I cast aside my projections to embrace the unvarnished reality before me.
Two rituals anchor me in this process of letting go and rediscovering my inner core: the art of writing and the solace of immersing myself in water. I ingeniously merged these two practices, encapsulating a poignant act of liberation. With deliberate strokes, I inscribed the Lithuanian word 'prisirišimas,' denoting 'attachment,' on a piece of paper, and gently submerged it in water. Over time, the water gradually erased the ink and transformed the paper, rendering it unrecognizable. Through the lens of my camera, I documented this ceremonial dance, where water from the Cambridge river symbolized a clean slate.
The river's elemental force converted my attachment to personal projections into a drifting entity that now narrates its unique stories, emancipated from any fixed constraints. My work extends an invitation to others, encouraging them to contemplate their own journey of relinquishment and embrace a genuine connection with the ever-evolving tapestry of reality.
